Walking in the Footsteps of History

Photo-report of Leg 3: PA and DE

by Ralph Nelson (Kirkwood Chapter, Delaware Society SAR)

Circumstances beyond our control prevented Lee from making the August portion of his walk along the W3R. In Lee's place I gave several talks in Pennsylvania and led a hike in Delaware. See details below.

On Oct 3 Lee led over a hundred people on a "Hike down the Pike" from the PA/DE border to the Riverfront Park in Wilmington.

Saturday, August 7

In the morning I gave a PowerPoint(TM) presentation to the Quarterly Board Meeting of the Pennsylvania Society SAR, which was held in Trevose PA.

I then drove to Lansdowne PA for a DAR-sponsored luncheon, where I spoke (in Revolutionary War uniform) to an audience of about forty people representing several local DAR chapters and historical societies. At both presentations there were several people or organizations in the audience who are sponsoring the walk by buying a share in the project.

Sunday, August 8

Several Scouts and joined me for a "walk and talk" down a 5.4-mile section of W3R along Rt 4, from Richardson's Mill in Newport to the Hale-Byrnes House in Stanton, where we had lunch and a tour of this historic home.

The Nentego Lodge, Order of the Arrow, (a unit of the DelMarva Council, Boy Scouts of America) has prepared a Scout Historical Trail booklet for the W3R in Delaware Scouts can earn a special patch for participating in this educational walk.
