Although Spain did not sign a military treaty with the United States during
the Revolutionary War, Spain was allied with France during this time.
Actions that furthered the goal of defeating the British around the world
were important for reducing U.S. casualties, securing arms and other supplies
via the Mississippi River (which passes through Spanish-controlled New Orleans),
and drawing British fleets and troops to the Spanish possessions
in the Caribbean Islands and in the Mediterranean.
The Spanish infantry flag featured the red cross of Borgona on a plain white field.
It was introduced in 1565 and formed the basis for many Spanish military banners through 1783.
